The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA), March 13,1998 "Musicologists and historians--amateur and professional--owe David Kincaid a thank-you note...Rich and resonant, 'The Irish Volunteer' is living history." (Craig Shapiro) The Express-Times (Easton, PA), March 13, 1998 "'The Irish Volunteer' is certain to get your Irish-American blood pumping"...."an important work, historically and musically. And it's good listening as well, a rare combination indeed." (Patrick O'Donnell) The Patriot Ledger (Quincy, MA), March 14, 1998 "A wonderful album celebrating a little-known part of the Irish heritage is 'The Irish Volunteer'".... The Wild Geese Digest (US Internet), March, 1998 "This is a collection of fine and professionally produced music, but it is not background music. It has too much passion, war and politics. Pick a CD of harp instrumentals to play with your dinner party, unless you want to restart the Civil War." (G. Leslie Sweetnam) The Irish Voice (New York), April 14, 1998 "Forget 'Ashokan Farwell.' This is the real sound of the music--specifically the Irish music--of the American Civil War"...."David Kincaid's sturdy singing and guitar playing brings these long neglected songs back to life after more that a century of neglect." (Don Meade) Civil War Times (US), June 1998 ..."50 minutes of music you won't soon forget"...."Listening to Kincaid's music, one can easily understand why so many Irishmen fought so hard; sing-along tunes like these just might get your blood boiling." (Jeff Clouser). The Boston Globe, May 22, 1998 "...a riveting new recording of Irish-American Civil War songs, most unheard for a century or more...."Kincaid is a grand singer with a whiskey baritone full of fine gravel and crackling emotion;"...."'The Irish Volunteer' is one of the most emotionally credible Civil War recordings ever made, as well as a superb, irresistibly melodic Irish folk recording." (Scott Alarik) Irish American News, (Chicago, IL), June 1998 "Musically, 'The Irish Volunteer' will delight fans of traditional Celtic music"...."sure to capture the attention of history buffs and Celtic music fans alike." Roots World (The Online Magazine Of Roots And Folk) ..."Kincaid's tribute to these brave soldiers is a valiant effort that succeeds in every detail." (Ryan MacMichael) The Gael (California), July 1998 "Kincaid has just the right voice--hearty, sharp, but not too robust--to carry off these songs"... The Irish Herald (California), July 1998 "Kincaid has treated these songs with the respect and reverence they deserve"...."he has good reason to be proud of the results"..."'The Irish Volunteer' CD should be added to the collection of every Irish-American." (Barry Mullis) The Desert Shamrock (Arizona), April 1998 "This is the finest work of its kind that I have had the pleasure of listening to"...."an absolute gem"...."Kincaid's lead and harmony vocals alone are worth the price of the album"...."Kincaid's excellent arrangements make the music very interesting, memorable and easy to listen to." (Dr. Peter Rolland) Music Matters, Issue 9, 1998 "Now we have David Kincaid's fine collection of songs ".... "His voice is perfect and his arrangements and instrumentation, simple and well balanced"...."this is a CD detailing a little known point in American history that is simply delightful in its content and delivery." (C.P. Donahue) America's Civil War (US) September, 1998 "...The Irish Volunteer is an enlightening and entertaining slice of American history." (Jon Guttman) The Irish Times (Dublin, Ireland), September 29, 1998 "Had David Kincaid not come along with zeal and a passion to bring them [the songs] to light again, who knows how long it might have taken to uncover this segment of Irish-American history?"...."Stirring stuff." (Dick Hogan) Irish Music Magazine (Ireland, US), November, 1998 "...a reenactor who had tunneled his way through enough research for a Ph.D., it is not surprising that Kincaid strove for authenticity in the recording studio"...."The inclusion of traditional musicians gives Kincaid's CD strong musical values and move it from the category of a historical restoration to a lively and enjoyable recording." (William H.A. Williams) Dirty Linen (US), Dec./Jan., '98-'99 "David Kincaid, a Civil War reenactor and a fine singer, has pulled together 12 songs written about and popular among the 160,000 Irish-born soldiers who fought to preserve the Union"...."the result is a fine piece of work." Irish Music Magazine (Ireland, April 2005) ...The list of songs by and about the Irish published in song books and song sheets is legion, and a good representative selection of them is heard on this album. Excellent and all as it is, this CD is more than a collection of the songs of the Irish who fought in the American Civil War 1861 - 65; it's a brief history and photographic record of Irish involvement, north and south, in that conflict. The History Channel Magazine (July/Aug. 2004) ...In recent years they [the songs] have been revived and accurately performed through the meticulous research and talent of David Kincaid, whose critically acclaimed renditions of Irish songs from both sides of the conflict are currently available on two CDs. (Joseph G. Bilby) Irish America Magazine (February/March 2004) ...Kincaid has fused his twin passions for Civil War history and Irish/Celtic music in his two collection of songs from that era... ...these songs have to be preserved so that everyone can have access to them, Irish and non-Irish alike." (Jamie Dawson) America's Civil War Magazine (US, Nov. 2003-Jan.04 issue) ....a delightful CD of Civil War music. Kincaid's previous work, which has established him as a serious researcher and interpreter of Civil War-era music, is complemented by this fascinating selection of Union and Confederate Irish musical pieces. The Irish Echo (New York, Nov. 19, 2003) ...David Kincaid has been to the forefront in bringing the songs and music of Americas Civil War into the popular realm... ...The CD is handsomely packaged with a booklet providing historical context as well individual song lyrics. The Irish-Americans Song has a powerful resonance that carries down to these troubled times. A great stocking stuffer for those interested in the Civil war and the Irish who fought in it. (Ray OHanlon) The Wild Geese Today (US Internet, Aug. 2003) ...'The Irish American's Song follows, in style and intent, his deservedly praised 1998 album The Irish Volunteer, and certainly meets the high standards set by that work. |
